So what does this mean for Spears?

A conservatorship is defined as having a “ guardian or a protector is appointed by a judge to manage the financial affairs and/or daily life of another due to physical or mental limitations.” Spears’ father, Jamie Spears, has had a conservatorship over his daughter since 2008, after she infamously shaved her head and smashed in a car window.

Spears’ father has had control over all of her assets and her estate for 13 years. She is not allowed to spend any of her own money, manage her own time, or even decide when she is going to see her children. This has been a main concern over the last few months for many of her fans, many stating that she is 39 years old, and should have control over her own life.

The case has also been brought to light even more since the the new documentary, “Framing Britney Spears”, in which they describe how Spears was treated during her days in the spotlight- not only by fans, but by fellow stars.

One of the people featured in the movie is Spears’ lawyer, Samuel D. Ingham III who, in November, went in front of the judge stating “My client has informed me that she is afraid of her father,” and later going onto say that “She will not perform again if her father is in charge of her career.”

Jamie Spears has had sole conservatorship over his daughter since 2019, after the exit of attorney Andrew Wallet. This has recently been change, and now private trust company, Bessemer Trust, has co-conservatorship over Spears’ assets.

Spears and her lawyers are still working to remove her father from the conservatorship all together, but he will still be part of it for some time. Another of Spears’ lawyers, Tamar Arminak, stated that “The judge is starting to listen to Britney. I think what the court did was not indicative of removing Jamie at any point in time.”
